Career Path Academy 2018-04-23T09:55:36+00:00

My seventeen year old son and I recently toured a University in Ontario. We heard from the Finance Representative that the cost of attending was between $17,000- $21,000 per year. Later on, the Administration Representative shared some facts about the University and then asked the prospective students: "How many of you know what your major will be?" Approximately 5% raised their hands. She went on to inform the group that over 70% of their students change their major, or continue to attend classes with an 'undeclared major' after their first year, so don't worry "That’s normal." Now would any parent be comfortable with this guidance? We designed Career Path Academy to address issues like these. When you know yourself you will make prudent decisions and design your future.

As a parent or guardian you know how important it is to help your child decide on a career path to be successful. It is becoming more important that they enter this decision with more insight into what is available for them in the future. Families are investing anywhere from $25,000 to $110,000 into college or university programs, with over 70% of graduates either not working in their field, not happy with their decision or just not working because they don't have the skills needed in the job market. The stakes are high for students to make better choices around this life altering investment. A parent said, “If I’m investing $25, 000 to $110 000 into my child’s education I want to be sure we are doing the right thing.

What if there was a tool, a program that gives students the advantage needed to make decisions to gain true success, happiness and fulfillment in their lives?

We offer a systematic approach to self-knowledge, which we believe is the true foundation for a life which leads to happiness and lasting success. Students will discover who they were designed to be and not choose careers arbitrarily. Our program is about teaching people to understand who they are and continue to be aware of themselves, as they grow into each transition in their education and life path.

Career Path Academy is about tapping into your potential.

We focus on four key areas:

  1. Personality and Human Behaviour.

Correct me if I’m wrong, “It does not matter where you go or what you do the rest of your life you will have to deal with people.” We teach people skills which I believe our school curriculum should be teaching from grade one through grade 12. At least one hour per month should be spent on skills with people. They are lucky if they spend one hour per year in that department. I have found people don’t quit companies, people quit people. It’s usually a difficult person they are forced to deal with every day that forces that result. If they are working with pleasant people or a good team most would take a pay cut if they had to because of difficult times. Most will not take a raise in pay to deal with a difficult person.

  2. Talents and Abilities.

I tell our attendees “You have 8 – 10 talents. What are they? How do you use them? That’s when 80% of them freeze and claim they don’t have any talents. I inform them that it’s pretty difficult to get through a week without using at least 4 of your talents. Because we are outer directed it becomes frustrating to figure out these simple truths about ourselves. Most find it easier to find talents and good qualities in friends and family members than in themselves. Yet if you sit across the desk at some company who was hiring what do they want to know about you? Whether or not you are a good fit for this company, which means they need to know what you are good at or in other words your 8 – 10 talents.

  3. Operating System

It’s your particular way of doing things which stems from your values, thoughts and beliefs. Similar to a computer you have been downloading programs all your life. Just like your computer has an operating system so do you. Most programs are working in the background and you are not even aware of their effects on you. With these programs you sometimes get the results you want and other times you don’t. We often say “that’s just the way I am.” Well don’t believe it for one second, we help you become aware of why you do the things you do and give you strategies to change the behaviours that don’t give you the results you want and enhance the one that do. Your operating system will allow you to reach new heights or it will paralyze you. You need to be aware and in control of your operating system.

  4. Career Path Specialist
With a Career Specialist we explore the skills you need to develop based on your personality needs and your top talents. These are the tools you will grow to offer value to an employer or to start your own business.

It was August 31 in the middle of the afternoon, a few days before the commencement of school. I needed fuel so I drove into the nearest gas station where a young woman came over to serve me. Being my jovial self I said, “So are you excited to go back to school?” As if she was some eight year old. She said, “Everyone is asking me that, no I’m not excited to go back to school. I ‘m finished school.” I asked, “Oh, so where are you going, College, University or working for a while?” She said, “I finished college last year. I’m 22 years old.” I was shocked because she looked around 16 years old. I asked, “What school did you attend and what did you study?” She said, “I went to --- College, I studied some law thing.” Just the way she said ‘Law thing’ I thought I should tread lightly. As she was filling up I asked her, “What are you going to do now?” she said, “I’m working here 5 days a week and I have my weekends off, so I’m good.” I said, “So in other words you don’t know what you are going to do with your life.” She said, “That’s about it.” I said, “Don’t worry, you are young, you’ll figure it out.” I paid for my gas and drove away. As I was driving down the street I couldn’t help but think of the large number of young people in that position. Finished school, diploma or degree in hand, with no intention of using what they studied in the labour market or simply can’t find employment.

But I lied to her. I lied when I said, “Don’t worry you are young you will figure it out.” The fact is very few actually figure it out. Very few are actually in a position where they are doing what they are meant to do and loving it, earning a good income. Think for a moment, out of all the people you know, how many of them are in a position where they love what they do for a job or career? How many of them are passionate about what they do? I am sure you can count them all on one hand. Sad isn’t it? We live in one of the richest countries in the world. We literally have people coming from third world countries with next to nothing in their pockets and in 10 to15 years they are living their dreams. People are living longer capable of living healthier lives. Comfort and convenience belongs to us now. Science and technology have risen to astounding levels. What took us an hour perusing through encyclopedias in our bedroom or on the kitchen table is now taking seconds or a few minutes on google? Still statistics tell us people are living unfulfilled lives and unhappy in one of the richest countries in the world. Something is wrong… We must ask, “What’s going on?” To answer this question I believe we need to visit our childhood. More specifically visit a question we are asked at an early age. The question was and still is, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” There are two major problems with that questions.1. How can you tell me what you’re going to be without first knowing who you are? 2. It forces you to become what I call outer directed, meaning it forced you to look at what’s appealing to the eyes, appealing to the mind, appealing in society or appealing through the media. But not what’s appealing to the core, the essence of who you are. Let’s face it that is the only way to find true fulfillment, true happiness. I love what Anthony Robbins said, “Success without fulfillment is failure.”
